Restored to Nature

The project follows the completion of Hale Medical Tower, built on top of the former Olmstead Brothers–designed Prouty Garden. Hale Medical Tower added 150 beds to Boston Children’s Hospital and eliminates double rooms in the facility. It also marks 25 percent more green space at the BCH campus vis-a-vis the Mikyoung Kim–designed gardens. She remembers her parents taking out a loan to buy her an upright piano when she was five “instead of a car for themselves.

Mikyoung Kim, founding principal of Mikyoung Kim Design, blends art and science, shaping restorative landscapes. Her studio is an innovative group of architects, landscape architects, and artists, exploring an interdisciplinary practice. Envisioned as an urban grove, this central gathering space represents the convergence of a diverse community among mixed income, residential development. The design accommodates a complex program, layering the varied multi-cultural and intergenerational uses of the plaza with a number of meaningful gathering and recreational spaces. In Boston’s Kenmore area, a new “green master plan” and garden by Mikyoung Kim spruces up the medical center encircled by busy roads and sky ramps. The project adds four new open-air gardens, three interior winter gardens, and a redesigned main hospital entry to the campus.

You may know the firm already, but we just had to include it on the list nonetheless. Winning some of the most coveted commissions in the last 10 to 15 years, JCFO is a landscape architecture and urban design practice with offices in New York City and London. The firm is noted for its innovative, contemporary design interventions across a range of project types and scales, running the gamut of large urban districts to complex abandoned and postindustrial sites.

We are currently studying the physiological effects of noise on the body, with elevated levels of cortisol that affect our pulse rate and adrenaline and trigger our fight or flight hormones. We have been working with the acoustic community to understand the physical damage that both sustained and brief noises can create in our sense of isolation, depression, and early death in city life. It’s exciting to see that our work is not just about form and beauty but that we can create places that bring about health and wellness in real ways using psychological and scientific research as the basis of design. When I look back on the projects that I wanted to work on that I didn’t win…I think that now I feel like if I had gotten them, then I wouldn’t have pursued the other projects that have helped to shape the thought leadership of our studio. Life is not a linear process and resilience in building the public realm emerges from a process that is about open discovery and accepting the pathway that comes out of both good luck and setbacks. Katherine holds a bachelor’s in architecture and a master’s in landscape architecture from the University of Tennessee. Yufei believes that landscape architecture has the power to regenerate and transform the environment bringing about a positive change that builds unique connections between communities and their context. She gravitates towards the conservation of the natural environment to provide sustainable design solutions through a balance of urban development to coincide with nature. Trained as both an architect and landscape architect, she brings numerous years of experience in both fields to her projects.

As the Founder and Design Director of Mikyoung Kim Design, Mikyoung brings an artistic mindset to projects based on practical problems of ecology and conservation. Over the past two decades, the firm has crafted a body of work that repositions the discipline of landscape architecture as at the intersection of art and science. From the art of ecology and restorative landscapes, their work addresses pressing environmental and health-related challenges, while creating artful and immersive experiences. Her work is focused on bringing the science and art of resiliency and healthy living into the landscape experience.

The influence of what Lil' Kim and her team put forth all those years ago is clear when you look at how most mainstream women rappers are styled today. And the wigs, much like they were for Kim, are still very much an important part of the entire ensemble. "I didn't understand the depth of the influence," she tells POPSUGAR over a Zoom call. It wasn't until the actual exhibit that Alexander realized the impact of the work she'd done all those years ago. Working on Ford's Michigan Central using tried and true tools to understand scale of the various landscape elements including a sitewide resiliency pond that doubles as the gateway to this park.

But when she was finessing synthetic wigs for the red carpet 20 odd years ago, Alexander was just having fun being creative. The Maryland native got her start in celebrity hairstyling in the early '90s working with MC Lyte, then Mary J. Blige. But Kim's outgoing personality and willingness to try anything inspired a distinct kind of magic. She isolated high fashion's shameless excess, dialed it up, then sprinkled in ghetto-fabulous femininity and an unapologetically vixenish vibe.

Guiding the firm’s work is a strong commitment to designing a vibrant, dynamic public realm informed by both the ecology of people and nature. Critically acclaimed and award-winning projects include the High Line, Freshkills Park and the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Based in Los Angeles, California, Studio-MLA is a full-service international landscape architecture practice and has under its belt a diverse range of public and private projects. From large urban parks and neighborhood redevelopment to intimate garden spaces, MLA approaches each work with high emphasis on holistic, public engagement and creative methodologies. The firm’s design interventions seek to foster rich, layered experiences, using the experiential qualities of natural and man-made elements as well as the ephemeral properties of materials.

With Ford's Michigan Central Park we are working closely with the team to create a responsive and connected public realm with the latest technologies and looking to a future city with electrified mobility. As a recent bride myself, I understand the importance of finding the right hairstyle that brings out the best in you. In a city saturated with bridal stylists, I set myself apart by taking pride in the quality of my work, my dedication to product sanitation, and prompt communication with all my brides. This landscape and the seasonal changes is what I really know and love…the snow and the changing of the leaves…this landscape is like coming home. During the work week I live in a Brookline brownstone townhouse, it’s very vertical with floor-to-ceiling windows.

Her interests in her projects at MYKD are built off the research she did at the Yale Center for Ecosystem and Architecture where she developed prototypes for material studies in modular building. Originally from Shanghai, she embarked on her academic journey at William & Mary, where she focused on geology and environmental science. Since completing her studies in New Haven, Jun has been contributing to design research, working with the Yale Center for Ecosystem and Architecture. Alex is interested in community-driven impactful design with a focus on design that strengthens neighborhoods through a focus on health and well-being.

Boston Children’s Hospital (BCH) is a Brutalist ensemble completed in 1970 by The Architect’s Collaborative (TAC). Later in 2014, Payette added the James Mandell Building to the hospital complex, a 10-story urban infill tower. In 2022, Payette’s contribution was followed by the Shepley Bulfinch–designed Hale Medical Tower. More recently, Mikyoung Kim Design, a local landscape architecture firm, is the latest studio to finish a major addition to the children’s center on Longwood Avenue.

Trained as an architect, she brings a detail oriented work ethic to all her projects. Alex's projects include Eastman and McDermott Court at MIT and the Somernova Project in Somerville. In Architecture with a minor in Engineering and a Masters of Architecture from Northeastern University. A frequent international speaker, she has spoken at Yale University, the Gardner Museum, Stanford University and the National Building Museum in Washington DC.

The design intent, the architects say, is to give patients a place of contemplation and escape from the noise and stresses of the hospital. The final garden expansion, the Wishingstone Garden, takes cues from the bedrock of the site. It adds sinuous granite benches and raised garden beds to give the natural landscape an even more organic form. In the beginning, it was a startup — literally above the garage in an apartment I rented in Providence Rhode Island. I worked collaboratively with my students in the fine arts, landscape, and architecture at all hours exploring ideas and developing a sense of how the landscape can make our lives better.
