The sweat test is the standard test for diagnosing cystic fibrosis. It may be used if you have symptoms that may indicate cystic fibrosis or to confirm a positive diagnosis from a screening of your newborn baby. A normal sweat chloride test alone does not mean you do not have cystic fibrosis. Lower levels of chloride may indicate the need for further testing to diagnose or rule out cystic fibrosis. The type of newborn screening that is performed varies from state to state.

Newborn screening for cystic fibrosis is performed during a baby’s first 2 to 3 days of life. A few drops of blood from a heel prick are placed on a special card and analyzed in labs. The sweat test is considered the most reliable for diagnosing cystic fibrosis. Sweat tests should be done at a CF Foundation-accredited care center, where guidelines are used to help ensure accurate results. The sweat test is performed by a trained technician and the results are evaluated in an experienced and reliable laboratory.

Newborn screening

A person may feel tingling in the area, or a feeling of warmth. The cystic fibrosis sweat test will last about an hour, during which the lab technician will collect and measure the sweat on your child’s arm. You will be able to take your child home after the test. If your doctor thinks your child may have CF, Children’s Health℠ uses sweat tests as a safe and painless way to get answers. The test collects and measures the salt in an adult’s or child’s sweat. There are high expectations that the new medication will significantly improve the health of patients.

The sweat test results may also be sent to your child's healthcare provider. Although this test can diagnose CF in anyone, it's usually done on babies and young children. If your baby had a blood test at birth that was positive for CF, your baby's healthcare provider may order a sweat test. This test is usually done before your baby is 4 weeks old. Doctors may also recommend genetic tests for specific defects on the gene responsible for cystic fibrosis.

Typically, the cost of this newborn screening is included in health care services in countries that have universal health care, such as in Canada.

The liver stores enzymes for digestion, and injury to the liver can release some of these enzymes into the blood. Blood tests measure the level of enzymes in the blood, and can indicate liver damage, or blockage in the ducts around the liver. An oxygen saturation test measures the percentage of red blood cells that carry oxygen. It can tell if a person's lungs aren't working as well as they should. The sweat test detects a higher amount of chloride — a component of salt — in the sweat of people who have cystic fibrosis. In order to make sweat for this test, a colorless, odorless chemical and a little electrical stimulation are applied to a small area of a person’s arm or leg. The sweat is collected and sent to a hospital lab for testing. When a child has cystic fibrosis, it is very important to diagnose it early to help prevent complications.

In this study, the researchers examined 50 adult patients with the disease both before and after treatment with Kaftrio®. In 2020, a new medication, Kaftrio®, was approved in Denmark. Today most Danish patients with cystic fibrosis are being treated with this drug, which improves the activity of the defective CFTR molecule. Until now, measurement of the chloride concentration in sweat has been the most widely used method of evaluating a patient’s CFTR function.
